You can draw an object from ‘Asset’ window and align it to our path or you can add sample data and align it to our path and you can also align a ‘Text’ to our path.įor the first demonstration, we will use sample data which will hold collection of images to be aligned to our layout path. Now to align the objects around the layout path which is an ‘Ellipse’, we need to add objects on our WPF form. Now if you check your ‘Layout Paths’ section in the properties window, you will see your ellipse got added as a layout path, as shown below: Now drag the ‘Circle’ (Select an object to use as a LayoutPath) highlighted by a yellow color square (as shown in the above diagram) over the ‘Ellipse’ and click on the ‘Ellipse’. Now draw an ‘Ellipse’ on the art board as shown below – (I am using a height of 300 and width of 400 for the ellipse control).Īfter drawing the ellipse on the art board, go to the ‘Assets’ window in the controls section and add a control ‘PathListBox’ on the ‘MainWindow’ as shown below:Īfter selecting the ‘PathListBox’ control, go to the Properties window and find a section ‘Layout Paths’ as shown below : Change the background color of the ‘Grid’ layout to ‘Black’.
Once the WPF application is created, change its ‘Height’ and ‘Width’ to ‘500’ and ‘600’ respectively. So let’s start by creating a WPF application using Microsoft Expression Blend 4.0 and call this application as ‘WPFMotionPathExample’: Read my previous article Silverlight 4: Introduction to Behaviors to learn more. To use Visual States, you will need some basic knowledge of Behaviors.

We will also see how to animate these objects using Visual states in WPF. In this article, we will see how to align some objects to a given path using the ‘PathListBox’ control in WPF 4.0 and Expression Blend 4.

In general, the process and steps used in the lab manual to design this application are taken straight from this talk … they have made it so clear and easy it was like a revelation for me :-).

Watching this is highly recommended! And, if you want to know how to access SQL data from your WPF application, they are describing in detail how to do that using some code snippets. You can access the video of Celso’s and Kirupa’s talk at. If you want to see the presentation I usually do together with the demo, you can download the PPT here: The World of Expression. Also, I wanted to tell a bit of a story around the demo to be able to include a bit of background info on XAML and Microsoft’s UX story. (I am not a developer, so I wanted to only use Expression tools). I have learned a lot of my WPF knowledge from this talk so I decided to create this hands on lab which has been modified from the original to only use the Expression tools and no code at all.
They held a great presentation at MIX 08 called Applications = Designers and Developers where they went through the steps required to design and build such a working application from scratch.
This hands on lab is based on the incredible work of two of my colleagues at Microsoft – Celso Gomes and Kirupa Chinnathambi. Descriptions and art details come from Wikipedia. All the images used in this application are in the public domain or have been taken by me. The assets (images and code files) can be found here.
Apologies for that, but I have been extremely busy with holding presentations and trainings around Expression and Silverlight.Īnd this is the reason for this post: this post is about a complete WPF Training Hands On Lab. Greetings … long time no read, I have been rather inactive for a long time now.
